MailerSend alternatives for teams that outgrew a plan

MailerSend sells transactional email in four steps: a Free plan, Hobby at $6.30 a month, Starter at $31.50 and Professional at $99. The first three are fine until you hit the edges, and the edges are where people start searching for alternatives: one-day activity history on Hobby, a ladder that skips from 5,000 emails to 50,000, and a Professional plan that costs three times Starter for the same 50,000 emails. This page works through those edges and shows which of Resend, Mailgun, Mailtrap, SMTP2GO, Amazon SES and Postmark cost less or give more at 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 emails. Prices were read from MailerSend's pricing page and the other vendors' pages on October 7, 2026.

Where MailerSend starts to pinch

Hobby is cheap but thin

Hobby covers 5,000 emails a month for $6.30, with one domain, five seats, ten templates, 1,000 daily API requests and one day of activity data retention. Extra usage costs $1.50 per 1,000 emails. For a side project that is fine. For an app with real customers, one day of history means a support question on Tuesday about Monday's email may already be unanswerable.

The break-even is lower than the plan names suggest

Because Hobby overage is $1.50 per thousand, 10,000 emails costs $6.30 + (5 × $1.50) = $13.80, and 20,000 costs $28.80. Starter at $31.50 includes 50,000, so the cheaper plan flips at around 21,800 emails a month: ($31.50 − $6.30) ÷ $1.50 = 16.8 thousand over the Hobby allowance. If you are paying overage on Hobby for several months running, you are on the wrong plan.

Professional is priced for agencies, not for volume

Professional is $99 and includes the same 50,000 emails as Starter. What the extra $67.50 buys is operational: unlimited users, domains and templates, 30 days of activity retention instead of 7, 500,000 daily API requests, a dedicated account manager and a deliverability consultation, plus 150 SMS a month. If you only need longer logs, a different vendor will cost less than the jump.

The free plan is tiny

Free is 500 emails a month on one domain and one user, with 100 API requests per day. MailerSend also gives a 14-day trial with Professional features, but the trial allows only 500 emails a month. It proves the integration; it does not prove deliverability at your real volume.

Some webhook events need a paid plan

MailerSend's webhook documentation marks activity.deferred and activity.suppressed as paid-plan only. It also says a failing endpoint is retried with exponential backoff for up to about three days. If your alerting depends on deferrals, check this before relying on the free plan.

Cost at 10,000, 50,000 and 100,000 emails

MailerSend: 10,000 is Hobby plus five thousand extra at $1.50, or $13.80. 50,000 is Starter at $31.50. 100,000 is not a tier on the plan cards; MailerSend's own FAQ example describes an $68 Starter subscription that includes 100,000 emails, and the pricing page has a volume slider, so read your own number off it. Resend lists $20 for 50,000 and $90 for 100,000. Mailgun lists $15, $35 and $90. Mailtrap's billing docs list Basic at $15 for 10,000, $20 for 50,000 and $30 for 100,000. SMTP2GO is $15 for 10,000 plus $1.20 per extra thousand, which makes $63 at 50,000, and its Professional plan is $75 for 100,000. Amazon SES is $1.60, $8 and $16. Postmark Basic reads $15 at 10,000 and $55 at 50,000 on the slider of its pricing page (October 7, 2026); 100,000 is not a slider stop, and the nearest, 125,000, reads $115.

The MailerSend 10,000 and 100,000 figures are my arithmetic from its published overage rates, not tiers the vendor advertises.

Options by what is bothering you

The history is too short: Mailgun's Scale plan ($90 for 100,000) lists 30 days of log retention and Foundation ($35, 50,000) lists five. Compare that with MailerSend's one, seven and thirty days across Hobby, Starter and Professional.

The 50,000 price is too high: Resend at $20 is $11.50 below MailerSend Starter. Its Free plan allows 3,000 emails a month but caps sending at 100 per day, so a burst can be refused even when the month is under allowance.

You need room between 5,000 and 50,000: Mailtrap Basic at $15 for 10,000 and Mailgun Basic at $15 for 10,000 give you a mid-step that MailerSend's ladder does not have. Mailtrap also has a Free plan of 4,000 emails a month at 150 per day on one domain and user, eight times MailerSend's Free allowance.

You send by SMTP and do not care about the dashboard: SMTP2GO's $15 for 10,000 is a relay with a log; the price at 50,000 is $63, higher than MailerSend.

You want the lowest price and will run the rest: Amazon SES, with the caveat in the SES alternatives guide that nothing around the send is included.

Moving off MailerSend

Webhooks

List every event type your code reads. MailerSend names them activity.sent, activity.delivered, activity.hard_bounced, activity.spam_complaint and so on, and the new provider will use its own names. Map each one in a single adapter function so the rest of the application keeps seeing your own event vocabulary.

Templates

Hobby allows ten templates and Starter 250. If you built them in MailerSend's editor, export the HTML and variables first; the same template ID will not exist elsewhere, so change the send call to reference whatever the new provider uses.

Domains and seats

Starter allows 10 domains and five seats. Count what you actually use before choosing a replacement, since a provider that limits domains or seats on its entry plan may force an upgrade.
